03 Dec Who Is Jesus To You?
Who is Jesus to you?
We think, and may even take it for granted, that most of the people we know or meet already know who Jesus Christ is. Surprising though, that many people right here in the United States do not know who Jesus is. I asked a young man if he knew who Jesus was and he said, “He’s that dude that died on a cross or something, right?”
If you do know Jesus, you may describe Him this way:
The Son of God
Savior of mankind
The Lamb who was slain
The Bible says that Jesus is the exact representation of the nature of God. He is not a replica of God like a wax figure in a museum. He is not an image of God like Jesus in a painting. You cannot separate Jesus from God because they are one in the same. In the same way that you cannot separate the radiance of the sun from the sun, you cannot separate the glory and radiance of God from God. In Hebrews 1:3, we are told Jesus is “the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.” Jesus radiates the glory of God in the same way the sun radiates light. We cannot look right at God or we would be blinded, the same way you can’t stare directly into the sun. It’s too much for us to handle.
God did not just say one day, “I think I’ll create a Son.” The Bible tells us that Jesus was there from the very beginning. Genesis 1:1 – “In the beginning was the Word.” Jesus is the Word of God, eternally begotten, not made. So why did God need Jesus?
When God created man, everything was good, until Adam and Eve blew it by doing the one thing they were told not to do. They ate from the Tree of Knowledge. After that, sin came into the world and it has been downhill ever since. God cannot tolerate sin. He can’t be in the presence of it. God got angry at man a lot. He flooded the entire world and killed everyone except Noah and his family. Then after everything came back and the world was replenished with sinful man, He wiped entire cities off the map. He destroyed entire tribes along with all their cattle and everything they owned. God knew that for our sake we needed a mediator to go between us and God. Just like you need sunglasses to see the sun, we needed Jesus to mediate on our behalf. Jesus is the one who goes before the Father to plead on our behalf. Thank God He loved us that much! “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
It was God’s love for us that sent Jesus here as a baby. It was love that caused him to travel all over teaching and healing people. It was love that sent Jesus to the cross to die for the sake of our sins. It was love that raised him from the dead and love that set him at the right hand of God. And it will be love when Jesus comes again to save us.
In Jesus’ own life and still today, his very presence was a point of remarkable debate. Some said Jesus was God, and others said he was demon possessed. Some said Jesus was a good teacher, and others called him a liar. Some said he was brilliant, and others labeled him insane. Jesus was hailed as a prophet, and he was labeled a blasphemer. Today people can be killed just for believing in Him. Christians are being murdered all over the world for refusing to renounce Jesus. But He told us that would happen. 2 Timothy 3:12, says: “Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
It’s good to know who Jesus is, but it’s not enough to just know who Jesus is. Even the devil knows Jesus intimately. Which brings us to the second question,
Who is Jesus to you? Jesus is not your Lord and your Savior until you personally invite Him to come into your heart and into your life. You are not saved until you have surrendered your life to Jesus and are willing to trust Him for your future. Jesus said, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
It’s not enough for you to be a good person, a kind or generous person because when you stand before Jesus for judgment, He will say “Yes, you were good and kind and generous, but I did not know you.” Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
It’s not enough to go to church on Sunday, but never apply any of the ways Jesus taught you to live your life. You can even say you are a Christian and not know Jesus at all. I’ve known Christians who got high, had affairs, cheated on their taxes, lied to people, beat their kids, beat their wife and I can tell you that when they stand before Jesus they are going to be in for a big surprise.
Listen to what Jesus says about Heaven. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ Matthew 7:21-23
You can’t just act like a Christian and think you are going to Heaven. You can’t just serve God, help the poor, pray for the sick, and not know Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Please do not be fooled about this.
Knowing who Jesus is to you is vital to your eternal life in Christ.
Invite Jesus into your heart to be your Lord and your Savior.
Surrender all to Him and ask that His will be done in your life.
In all you do, seek a deeper relationship with Jesus through surrender, worship, prayer, study and service.
If you think this all sounds too hard and you don’t want to mess with it, then be prepared on that day to answer for your life. You won’t be able to say that no one ever told you about Jesus.
I’m not telling you this to scare you or make you feel bad. I’m telling you this because I care about what happens to you in eternity. According to the Bible, things are going to get pretty bad here on Earth before Jesus comes back. You need to know where you stand and what you believe in. Don’t be one of those people who can be blown over by the wind.
You need to know who Jesus is and who He is to you. You need to know why you love Him and tell others what He has done for you. If Jesus has never done anything for you, maybe it’s time you give Him a chance.
Jesus saved me from drugs. He saved me from poverty. He saved me from abuse. He saved me from my past. He healed me from cancer. He lifted me out of the pit I dug for myself and He gave me a new life.
When I finally swallowed my pride and asked Jesus for help, He came in like a flood. He changed my whole life. He changed my location, my job, my finances, my health, my friends. He blessed me with an incredible husband and children. He changed my whole family. He forgave me from my hideous past and changed how I thought of myself and others. He made in me a new creation and I will never stop being grateful for all that Jesus has done for me.
It’s time to stop playing Christian. It’s time to stop denying Jesus. It’s time to think of how you want to spend eternity. It’s time to stop blaming everyone else for your situation. It’s time to stop being complacent with the most important relationship you will ever have. It’s time to know Jesus Christ and know who He is to you.
He’s the one who died for you and Rose for you.
He’s the Resurrection and the Life.
He’s the one who mediates on your behalf.
He’s the one who forgives your sins by the blood that He shed for you.
He is the one who teaches you how to behave, how to live, how to treat others by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in you once you receive Jesus as your Lord.
He’s our Deliverer, our Counselor, our Redeemer.
He is Immanuel, God with us.
He’s the Lamb of God, the Light of the World.
He’s the Messiah, the Risen Lord.
He’s the Lion of Judah.
He’s our Rock, our Strength, our strong Tower and refuge.
He’s the Son of the Most High God, the Lamb who was slain.
He’s the Cornerstone, the Door, the Way and the Word.
He is the Prince of Peace, the Mighty God, Everlasting Father
He’s the True Vine and the Truth.
He’s the Good Shepherd and the Bread of Life.
He is the Victorious One who has beaten the devil once and for all.
He’s our Lord and our Savior. He’s the Son of Man.
He is Jesus Christ and He alone is worthy.
God bless you!
